The Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF) has been designed to provide
a dystem for the analysis of images and other classes of data.

Some of the functions that are provided are quite specialized, dealing as they
do with the characteristics of specific instruments, but others are generalized
functions for plotting data, computing statistic, processing lists, and
performing other functions that are common to data processing tasks in many
other fields.

Iraf is available on Linux Stations at I.R.A.: and you must have an account on
these computers.

The first time you use a new work station you have to create a /iraf link
( root privilege is required)

ln -s /irasoft/iraf /iraf

and after you have to run the command

mkiraf.

Then you have to modify the file "login.cl" created mkiraf.

If you need to use fits file only (and not old .pix files) you have to
change:

set imtype = " XXXXXXX "

with:

set imtype = "fits, inherit"

append also:

set stdgraph = xtermjh

Your computer and user configuration is finished !

Every time you need to use Iraf you have to enter the command :

iraf

That will define the IRAF environement

and the command

cl

to start the package.
