Epoch Folding 3 Series and Colour Colour Diagram (Application)

Application ef3 produces a folded light curve of three series of data and to calculate and plot in various ways the colour colour diagram (Ser.2/Ser.1 and Ser.3/Ser.2). It is run in the Question/Answer user interface by typing:

[n]Xronos> ef3
in the Partial Question/Answer user interface by typing:

[n]Xronos> ef3 [series1] [series2] [series3]
and in the Command-Driven user interface by typing:

[n]Xronos> ef3/period=X[/qualifier1/qual2/...etc] [series1] [series2] [series3]
where the /period= qualifier specifies the period over which the data are folded (in seconds if X>0 or days if X<0).

More on ef3

There are two important input parameters for folding applications: the epoch and the period over which the data will be folded. In folding applications the newbin time corresponds to the time duration of a phase bin in the folded light curve. This is determinated by the chosen number of phasebins per period. The default is such as to produce a folded light curve with 128 phasebins at maximum. The newbins per interval, together with the newbin time, determines the length of the time axis (an ``interval") over which each folded light curves is accumulated. Folded light curves from different intervals can be averaged in one or more frames. The default is to produce one frame only. The reason for averaging folded light curves from different intervals in a frame is to work out the error bars in the folded light curves from the standard deviation of the mean values of each phase bins. To calculate the error bars in this way global parameter number 9 (default =5) must be smaller than the specified number of intervals per frame.

If a phasebin is rejected in any of the series, after folding the corresponding phasebin of the other series is also rejected. The default is to plot the three folded light curves and the two hardness ratios (colours) vs. phase (two cycles are plotted). By specifying the relevant plot options, the hardness ratios can be plotted against each other (colour-colour) or removed altogether.

Normalisations

The analysis normalisation flag, specified by global parameter number 11 has the same meaning as in application ef1.
